Stories transport us into the shared human experience.
From the earliest of humans imprinting images in caves to tribe members gathered around a fire to books, operas, movies, television, social media, and even selfie sticks, people are irresistibly drawn to the power of storytelling.
Great stories change the way we understand other people and, by helping us see things from a perspective that is not our own, change the way we see the world.
We connect to each other through stories. They help life make a bit more sense. Give us order. Find some meaning. We wait for a hero to emerge. We want to know that we are not alone when we are in pain. We crave to believe there is a reward for endurance and pressing forward through trials. We find comfort in listening to the memories of others as they snap into focus far flung memories of our own. We are moved. We cry. We laugh. We are humans connected across time, geography, and culture.
Great stories change the way we understand other people and, by helping us see things from a perspective that is not our own, change the way we see the world. Another person’s experience may be foreign yet, at its core, it is oh so familiar. We are at once unique and undeniably similar.
The Denver Foundation developed Floodlight, an online storytelling platform, to illuminate stories that inspire. As a community foundation, we are at the intersection of countless stories of courage, generosity, resiliency, and gratitude. We hear beautiful stories every day and want to share them with you.
The story of a person who has experienced challenges yet found the strength within to start upon a new path. A person who has experienced generational wealth and is dedicated to investing in opportunities for others. A person who is a refugee and is making a new home in a new land. A person whose biggest dream is to help make the dreams of others come true. A person who is all of these things and more.
Hearing another person’s story fortifies our capacity for compassion, empathy, and growth. We want to partner with you to illuminate lives in Metro Denver.
